Royal Canadian Mint Celebrates 50th Anniversary of the Canadian Flag with Gold and Silver Coins

50thflagcanadaOn the 50th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada, the Royal Canadian Mint is celebrating the universally-recognized symbol of Canada with a fine silver collector coin enhanced by vibrant color. The coin was unveiled today at a special Flag Day ceremony at Confederation Park in Ottawa.

“The Mint is delighted to join Canadians in expressing our affection for the best country in the world and for the iconic flag which represents it, with a beautifully designed coloured silver collector coin,” said Michel Boucher, Vice-President of Human Resources and Quality Systems at the Royal Canadian Mint. “As Canada counts down to the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, the Mint will continue to honour people and events which have shaped our nation and we will soon ask Canadians to actively participate in our program.”

The collector coin, which bears a face value of $3, features a striking design of the map of Canada, filled in its entirety with the red and white motif of the Canadian flag. Retailing for $29.95, it is limited to a mintage of 15,000 and available to pre-order from www.mint.ca as of today. The coin will be available for purchase from Mint boutiques in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Vancouver as well as through its network of dealers and distributors including Canada Post as of March 20, 2015.

  • To further commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Flag, related numismatic coins were launched in January:
  • The 2015 proof silver dollar, proof set and brilliant silver dollar, all featuring the same design by Canadian artist John Mantha, which brings together symbolic elements that reflect how the Canadian flag is perceived both at home an abroad;
  • A 50-cent pure gold coin designed by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc, featuring a sugar maple leaf and the national flag seen in the background; and
    A $25 silver face value coin designed by Canadian artist Julius Csotonyi, depicting the Canadian flag billowing in the wind from the bough of a sugar maple tree.
  • The Mint will continue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag with additional coins later in the year.
