Saratoga 5 oz. Silver Uncirculated Coin on Sale Now

By CoinWeek News Staff….
The 2015 America the Beautiful Quarters Saratoga National Historical Park Five-Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin went on sale at noon Eastern Time today, December 3 at the United States Mint.

With a retail price of US$149.95, the coin has an Uncirculated finish and consists of five troy ounces (155.5 grams) of .999 fine silver. Minted at Philadelphia, the obverse features a ‘P’ mint mark, along with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY and the face value of a QUARTER DOLLAR. John Flanagan’s classic portrait of George Washington takes center stage.

The quarter’s reverse features a close-up centered on a sword passing from one hand to another, symbolic of the surrender of British General John Burgoyne to the victorious American General Horatio Gates on November 17, 1777, 10 days after the Second Battle of Saratoga. The battle and Burgoyne’s surrender is considered a turning point in the American Revolutionary War since it won the rebellious colonies the much-needed military, financial and materiel support of European superpower France.

United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Barbara Fox (View Designer’s Profile) and Mint sculptor-engraver Renata Gordon (View Designer’s Profile) designed and engraved the reverse, respectively.

Inscriptions on the back include SARATOGA, NEW YORK, E PLURIBUS UNUM, BRITISH SURRENDER 1777 and the year 2015.

There is an announced mintage limit of 30,000 coins, and a total mintage limit of 65,000 for the Saratoga five-ounce silver coin series, including the Saratoga National Historical Park 5 oz. Silver Bullion Coin. However, if demand for the bullion version is high enough, the Mint reserves the right to mint more than the initial limit of 35,000 five ounce silver bullion coins.

Currently, there is no production or household order limit in effect.
