By CoinWeek News Staff….

Demand for silver and gold at the Perth Mint spiked dramatically last month, with the total number of ounces sold reaching new highs for the year.

The Mint sold 63,791 troy ounces of gold in September – 12,703 ounces more than the previous yearly high of 51,088 troy ounces set back in July. Last month’s gold sales are the highest they’ve been since September 2014, when the Perth Mint sold 68,781 ounces.

Sales of silver totaled 3,349,557 troy ounces – a jump of over 373% from August, in which only 707,656 ounces were sold. Low silver spot prices are one potential cause of the surge.

September also saw the release of two key products: the new .9999 fine 2016 Silver Kangaroo bullion coin and the 2016 Gold Kangaroo bullion coin. The Mint released both issues on the 21st. Gold and silver 2016 Lunar Year of the Monkey bullion coins are set for release on October 5.
