Stack’s Bowers Baltimore Currency Auction Now Open for Bidding

The Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Winter Expo is now online and open for bidding. The auction, which will be held live Thursday, November 9, will offer nearly 700 lots of paper money covering the full spectrum United States currency.

Obsolete currency specialists will appreciate another great offering of proof and issued notes from the state of Pennsylvania, as parts of two long-term collections will be offered in the sale.

The auction will also feature a number of great Confederate notes including three of the “Big Six” types, among which is a pleasing T-4 $50 Montgomery graded Very Fine 30 by PMG (Lot #20228) that carries a pre-auction estimate of $15,000-$25,000.

In large size currency, a high-grade 1918 $1,000 Federal Reserve Note should draw plenty of interest (Lot #20410). The Fr.1133-C $1000 from the Philadelphia district is graded About Uncirculated 53 EPQ by PMG and is estimated to sell for $60,000-$80,000. A newly discovered Fr.197a 1863 $20 Interest Bearing Note (Lot #20330), one of just 26 known, is graded Very Fine 25 Net by PMG and is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

Small size currency will be highlighted by a high-end Gem Fr.1700 1933 $10 Silver Certificate (Lot #20441). The rare one year type note is graded Gem New 66 PPQ by PCGS and is estimated at $65,000-$75,000. Also of interest is a problem-free Fr.2221-K 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note from the Dallas district graded Very Fine 35 by PCGS and carrying a pre-auction estimate of $70,000-$90,000 (Lot #20482).

There is a very strong offering of National Currency notes. Among a number of high-grade National Currency types offered is a 1882 $100 Brown Back from the County National Bank of Clearfield, Pennsylvania, Charter #855, graded About Uncirculated 50 by PMG and estimated at $20,000-$30,000 (Lot #20651).

Lazy Deuce lovers will be interested in an 1875 $2 from the La Crosse National Bank of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Ch #2344, graded Very Choice New 64 PPQ by PCGS (Lot #20693). That lot carries an estimate of $20,000-$30,000.

A stunning 1882 $20 Brown Back from the Wisconsin National Bank of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, CH #4817, is graded PCGS Superb Gem New 68 PPQ and estimated at $15,000-$25,000 (Lot# 20694).

Collectors from the Hoosier state will be excited by a serial number 1 Original $5 from the First National Bank of Richmond, Indiana, CH #17, graded Very Fine 30 by PMG and believed to be the earliest serial number 1 note known on the state. That note is estimated at $15,000-$25,000 (Lot #20550).
