On October 26, 2025, GreatCollections will sell a superb gem PCGS PR67+DCAM CAC 1895 Morgan Dollar Proof. The coin is one of 880 struck of this Proof Only issue and one of just two graded by PCGS at the PR67+DCAM level. The service has graded just one coin finer. The other PR67+DCAM CAC from the JCS Collection sold in 2024 for $324,000. This example is likely to bring similar numbers as the market is always competitive for ultra high-end key dates. For the Morgan Dollar series, no coin captures the attention of collectors like the 1895 Proof.
The mystique of the 1895 Morgan Dollar Proof’s lies with its status as being a Proof Only issue, this despite official mint records suggesting a production of 12,000 circulation strikes. Not a single business-strike 1895 Morgan Dollar has ever been confirmed to exist. It is widely believed that the entire mintage was melted down before ever being released into circulation.
Curiously, the 1895 Proof does not have the lowest mintage in the series. The 1878 7 Tailfeathers Type has a mintage of 250 pieces, yet this coin does not demand the same premium as collectors have circulation strikes to fill their date and mint requirements. The rare 1879-O Branch Mint Proof has a reported mintage of just 12 pieces, with only half of those known- but this is an esoteric issue that is not as well known to the broader collecting community.
As it stands, this superior example will command the attention of all serious Morgan Dollar collectors. It’s current bid sits at $152,500 with 26 days to go.
