Draped Bust Half Dimes

Draped Bust Half Dimes replaced the Flowing Hair Half Dime design of engraver Robert Scot, which had been used in 1794 and 1795. United States Mint Director Henry W. DeSaussure had set out to improve the designs of all silver coins, and the Draped Bust design was used for all silver and copper coins starting in 1796.

The reverse was also modified. The eagle was reduced in size from the image used on the Flowing Hair version, though given a more robust appearance, and the encircling wreath was now comprised of two plant types rather than one. Draped Bust, Small Eagle Half Dimes were produced in 1796 and 1797.

Heraldic Eagle reverse half dimes were produced from 1800 through 1805.
