Roosevelt Dimes

Beloved President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945, towards the end of World War II and in the middle of his fourth term in office. Upon hearing the news, a sense of profound loss gripped America and her western allies. In response to this outpouring of sentiment, Treasury Department officials proposed that his portrait be placed on a circulating coin. The March of Dimes campaign to raise funds for polio research and victim care started during Roosevelt’s first term, and because it was believed that the president had suffered from polio, selection of the dime seemed appropriate. Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock created the design seen on Roosevelt Dimes ever since.

Silver Roosevelt Dimes were produced dated 1946 through 1964. clad dimes of the type first appeared dated 1965 and continue to be produced to this day.
