THE COLLECTIBLE COIN PROTECTION ACT (HR 1849)

Non-Partisan Bill Aims to Thwart Influx of Counterfeit Coins

Washington D.C

In an effort to stimulate interest in the passage of H.R. 1849 (The Collectible Coin Protection Act) Barry Stuppler, chairman of the Gold & Silver Political Action Committee and Jimmy Hayes, the coin and bullion community’s political consultant, met with congressmen on June 19th 2013.

waxmanThe Collectible Coin Protection Act (HR 1849) was introduced to in the US House of Representatives on May 7, 2013. This federal legislation amends and updates the Hobby Protection Act that was passed over 30 years ago. HR 1849 allows both law enforcement to take criminal action and individuals to take civil action against manufacturers, importers, and sellers of counterfeit coins and bullion products, as well as providing enforcement against the unauthorized use of registered trademarks belonging to collectible certification services.

This legislation is non-partisan and has no fiscal impact, and therefore has no opposition. Therefore, Mr. Stuppler and Mr. Hayes believe that HR 1849 should be supported by Democratic and Republican Congressman. During his visits Mr. Stuppler showed some excellent examples of counterfeit coins and certified holders to the Congressman and their staff.

During the visit they met with HR 1849 co-sponsor, Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA). At that meeting Congressman Waxman shared his concerns about counterfeit coins and holders and offer to send out a dear colleague letter to help convince his colleagues to support the bill and to gain more co-sponsors.
