By Hubert Walker for CoinWeek ….
As of noon Eastern Time, the 2016 Ronald W. Reagan Coin & Chronicles Set (product code 16PA) is now available for order at from the U.S. Mint online catalog. A maximum of 150,000 sets will be produced, and a household order limit of three is currently in effect though this may change over time.
The retail price of $68.95 is a little higher than usual but the Reagan Coin & Chronicle Set actually contains more than preceding sets. The contents include:
- One 2016 Presidential $1 Reverse Proof Coin (S);
- One 1.5-inch Ronald and Nancy Reagan Bronze Congressional Medal (struck at Philadelphia but without a mint mark);
- One Ronald Reagan Presidential portrait from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP);
- One booklet including images from Ronald Reagan’s life and Presidency; and
- One 2016 American Eagle One Ounce Silver Proof Coin (W)
Released on July 1, the Reagan Presidential dollar was the 39th and final issue in the Presidential $1 Coin series. Add to that the late former president’s popularity, and demand for the Coin & Chronicles set–the last of the series and the only set from 2016–should be fairly high. What makes its release especially newsworthy is the Mint’s recent track record for sales of this particular product line.
All of the 2015 Presidential $1 Coin & Chronicles Sets–featuring Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson–sold out exceedingly quickly after initial release:
–On June 30, 2015, the Truman Coin & Chronicles Set sold out within 15 minutes;
–On August 11, 2015, the Eisenhower Coin & Chronicles Set sold out within approximately 12 minutes;
–After going on and off the “Currently Unavailable” status on the Mint’s online catalog more than once, the JFK Coin & Chronicles Set became Unavailable one last time on November 2, 2015. It was released on September 16. It should be noted, however, that the Kennedy set had a maximum product limit of 50,000 – almost three times that of the 17,000 maximum for Truman and Ike, and twice that of the Johnson set’s 25,000 limit;
–And finally, on October 27, 2015, the LBJ Coin & Chronicles Set sold out by 4:00 pm, less than four hours after it went on sale.
Prices for the 2015 Coin & Chronicles Sets have tended to be high in the secondary market immediately following their release. It is possible that the Ronald Reagan Coin & Chronicles Set will go off sale as quickly as the previous sets did.
Ronald W. Reagan (40th President, 1981 – 1989)
Ronald Wilson Reagan is perhaps most remembered for helping to end the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1979-1981 and leading the country during the final decade of the Cold War against global communism as represented by the world’s only other superpower, the Soviet Union. An assassination attempt in 1981 led to declining health that impacted the rest of his presidency. Reagan announced publicly in 1994 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, instantly becoming arguably the most famous face of the condition. His last appearance in public took place at President Nixon’s state funeral in 1995.
Ronald Reagan died on June 5, 2004.
