The 1980-S United States Proof Set is a six-coin set that includes one Proof example of each United States coin struck that year. The set is best known for its inclusion of the failed Susan B. Anthony Dollar, which sees its second of three releases before production of the denomination is suspended until 1999, when production unexpectedly resumed on the eve of the launch of the Sacagawea Dollar in 2000.
The coins that comprised the 1980-S United States Proof Set had a $1.91 face value and were sold at an issue price of $10 per set ($46.22 in 2025 inflation-adjusted dollars). The United States Mint sold 3,554,806 sets. While individual coins from this set in high certified grades can sell for more money, in the 45 years since this set’s release, the set has depreciated in value. Recent eBay sales show prices for sets between $9 and $13 in 2025 money. Even taking the most optimistic number and comparing it to the inflation-adjusted issue price, the 1980-S United States Proof Set has lost over 70% of its value since release.
These declines are typical for most Proof Sets issued after 1968. The primary reason for this is overproduction and lackluster support by secondary market makers. The contrarians in us feel that interest in these sets will likely increase in the coming years–partly because they are attractive coins that are attractively priced, and partly because the dominant segment of the market will see the overlooked period of American coinage from the mid-1960s to the early 2000s with increasing nostalgia as time goes on.
For certified coins, the key to the set will be the 1980-S Lincoln Memorial Cent Proof, due to the fact that the highly reactive copper composition typically does not remain stable in this packaging and therefore is unlikely to grade Proof 69 or Proof 70.
