The 2018 Winter FUN Show has wrapped up and CoinWeek made a quick turnaround to attend the New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC), which is being held this week (January 11-14) at the Grand Hyatt in New York City. CoinWeek editor Charles Morgan was joined by CoinWeek Ancient Coin Series writer Mike Markowitz, who will be appearing in a few videos that will be filmed at the show.

At FUN, CoinWeek walked the bourse and spoke with a number of dealers, fans, and collector friends. Most gave an upbeat look at the numismatic market as it heads into the new year. The weather was cooler than expected, but nothing like what much of the country north of Tampa experienced. While it was expected that some collectors had to pass on the show due to inclement weather, floor traffic appeared on par with the 2016 Tampa show.

Auction Highlights

Auction results at Heritage’s FUN Signature Auction are an early bellwether to the strength of the rare coin market. Prices realized were strong and those that had material up for sale noted that they were pleased with the results. No million-dollar coins traded hands at the sale, but coins of particular interest were on offer.

Before the Platinum Night sessions, we sat down with Heritage Senior Numismatist Mark Borckardt to take in a Private Lot viewing of the some of the sale’s more interesting lots, including a pair of off-metal 1943 bronze cents, a Civil War $20 gold proof, and a recently discovered rare-date $20. This video will be made available shortly on CoinWeek.com.

Among other highlights not featured in the video are the Atwater 1838-O Reeded Edge half dollar that sold for $444,000, an 1880 Flowing Hair $4 Stella gold coin that went for $750,000, and a 1793 AMERICA PCGS MS63 Brown Chain cent, which brought $300,000.

We also stopped by to speak with the staff at Stack’s Bowers to get insights into the multi-part offering of the paper money collection of Joel R. Anderson. Anderson is one of the owners of Anderson Press, parent company of Whitman Publishing, LLC. The portion of Anderson’s paper money collection that was on display was unbelievable in technical quality and rarity. On camera, we talked with Currency Specialist Brad Ciociola, Director of Currency Peter Treglia, and the Dean himself, company co-founder Q. David Bowers – each of whom shared some of their favorite pieces. The $20 Technicolor note is a classic numismatic type; Anderson’s specimen carries serial number “1”. Our video about this collection is also coming soon.

Virtual Reality Comes to CoinWeek

For CoinWeek IQ, we shot two great CoinWeek videos that explain how the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) used to employ a Spider Press for the printing of currency notes. The primary version was shot in 4K UHD and features all the normal bells and whistles that you’ve come to expect from one of our productions.

A second CoinWeek Video version, shot entirely in Virtual Reality, will also be uploaded to YouTube. You’ll want to check it out.

We also filmed a great segment on collecting silver dollars with Julian Leidman in VR.

The first CoinWeek Video Cool Coins! segment of the new year is on its way. You’ll see four spectacular coins: a rare $20 error where the coin was struck on a large cent planchet; a shipwreck gold $2.50 from 1856 that is by far the finest known San Francisco issue of the date; a Bridgeport half dollar set in its original packaging; and the finest known 1884-CC in a GSA holder (it was a little toned, so the GSA sold it at a discount!).

We caught all of this on camera and more, so stay tuned as we process all of the raw video… plus whatever our team captures in New York.

It’s been a busy few weeks, and the World Money Fair in Berlin will be here before you know it!
