Welcome to this week’s “Budget Silver Coins for the Casual Collector.” For this feature, I go through our inventory and find some older, inexpensive silver coins, with a view towards recommending them for the beginning collector as an introduction to world coins. These coins would also make a nice “stocking stuffer” for the casual coin collector.
I’ve chosen one coin under $5, two coins between $5 and $10, and a coin between $10 and $15. Please keep in mind that the price of these coins will fluctuate slightly with the spot price of silver, but they should remain in the ranges I’ve chosen. I’ve tried to mix up the countries of origin, to keep things interesting.
For the Under $5 category, I’ve chosen the Canadian George VI silver dime. This coin was minted between 1937 and 1952, and the specific date you receive will be random from stock on-hand. In 1948, the Latin inscription around King George VI’s head was amended to remove the title “Emperor of India” upon India’s independence. The reverse of this coin features the famous Canadian schooner Bluenose as illustrated by Emanuel Hahn. This ten cent piece is made of 800 fineness silver with an ASW of .06 troy oz. and is 18mm in diameter.
For the $5-$10 category this week, I decided on the 1954-1967 Netherlands silver 1 Gulden coin and the and the 1930-1947 Panamanian Quarter Balboa silver coin. The silver Dutch Gulden features Queen Juliana on the obverse, and Royal Arms on reverse. This 25mm coin is made from 720 fineness silver and has an ASW of ,1505 troy oz. The Panamanian Quarter Balboa features the profile of the famous explorer Vasco Nuñez de Balboa, who founded the Spanish colony of Panama and was the first European to reach the Pacific Ocean by traveling overland in the New World. This coin was minted between 1930 and 1947, and well as a second mintage between 1953 and 1962. It is made of 900 fineness silver, with an ASW of .18 troy oz. and a diameter of 24.3mm.
For the $10-$15 category, I went with a silver coin that illustrates a little-known part of American history – the 1944-1945 Philippine 50 Centavos silver coin. These coins were made at the San Francisco Mint in the United States, and the reverse says “United States of America.” The Philippines were part of the United States as a Commonwealth territory until after World War I. These coins were ordered made by President Theodore Roosevelt, who was also the driving force for some of the most beautiful U.S. coins ever made. The obverse features a Filipina woman with a hammer resting on an anvil, while holding an olive branch in her other hand. Behind her, the volcano Mt. Mayon smokes. On the reverse is the shield of the Philippines with the inscription United States of America and the date. This 27.5 mm coin is made from 750 fineness silver with an ASW of .2411 troy oz.
