In 2013, the Royal Canadian Mint and DC Comics celebrated the diamond anniversary of the creation of the celebrated comic book hero Superman with the creation of a collection of colorized gold, silver, and base-metal Superman coins. The coins, drawn in the style of the comics, were an immediate hit with collectors and the comic book fans and led to second series of Superman coins in 2014. This $10 face value $10 matte proof is one of four 1/2 ounce silver Superman coins the Royal Canadian Mint will offer in 2015.
Obverse:
Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The queen faces to the left, as is the tradition. The inscription reads ELIZABETH II, D·G·REGINA, CANADA. Susanna Blunt’s initials “SB” are located on the Queen’s right shoulder, slightly above the bust truncation. The coin design is framed by a dodecagon-shaped border.
Reverse:
Superman stands in the center foreground of the design, rendered in full-color. To his right, Superman’s birth parents, the Els, cradle the infant Kal-El. To his left, the Kent’s pull the interstellar traveler from his crashed spacecraft. Standing behind Superman are Louis Lane, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Jimmy Olsen. Surmounting the design is a spiked word balloon, wherein the denomination “10 DOLLARS” and the date “2015” are inscribed in a comic font. The design is framed by a dodecahedron-shaped border.
