Candidate Designs Revealed for Upcoming Commemorative Coins, Gold Medals

By CoinWeek News Staff ….
The United States Mint recently revealed design candidates for a number of coin and medal programs, including the 2019 and 2020 Native American $1 coins, the 2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary commemorative coin program, and the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and Filipino Veterans of World War 2 Congressional Gold Medals. And on Wednesday, June 21, all of the designs will be reviewed and discussed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) as they make their final selections known to the Secretary of the Treasury. The Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), the independent agency that reviews the designs of buildings, public spaces and art to be placed within the boundaries of the District of Columbia, is also authorized to review candidate coin designs and make recommendations. They made their selections each of these items at their most recent meeting on Thursday, June 15; the CFA’s choices are noted below.

The theme for the 2019 Native American dollar coin is “Native Americans in Space”. It honors the contributions of Native American women and men to our nation’s space program.

The 2020 Native American dollar commemorates the 75th anniversary of the State of Alaska’s anti-discrimination law, regarded as the first law to criminalize discrimination in the United States. Civil rights activist and Tlingit Nation member Elizabeth Peratrovich was one of the driving forces behind its enactment.

The Apollo 11 50th Anniversary commemorative coin program consists of a $5 face value .900 fine gold Uncirculated coin, a $1 face value .900 fine silver Uncirculated coin, and a half dollar clad Uncirculated coin. Per the program’s authorizing legislation, the coins will be curved in a “fashion similar to the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame 75th Anniversary Commemorative Coin“. The candidate designs shown below are for the convex reverse, the specifics of which has been determined by law. It must feature a close-up representation of the famous photo of astronaut Buzz Aldrin with his visor down, reflecting the lunar lander and United States flag back to the camera.

Design candidates for the common obverse of the Apollo 11 commemorative coin program will be selected through a competition open to the public and reviewed by the CFA and CCAC at a later date.

Themes for the OSS medal include the covert side of its operations, its founder William “Wild Bill” Donovan, and its activity in World War 2 in general. The Filipino Veterans gold medal not only honors the members of the Philippine armed services mobilized under the United States Army to fight the Japanese in World War 2, whose sacrifices have long gone unrecognized and unappreciated by the U.S. at large.

Below are the designs sent to CoinWeek and other media outlets by the Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications (all images courtesy of the United States Mint).

Design 10 is the CFA recommendation. It features Mary Golda Ross, the first female Native American engineer and a Cherokee. One of the original 40 team members of aerospace company Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works, Ms. Ross helped develop satellite, missile and spaceflight technologies crucial not only to the nation’s space program but also to its defense and telecommunications industries. She was a great-granddaughter of Principal Cherokee Chief John Ross, who lead his people during the Trail of Tears and the Civil War.

  1. I feel like the CFA typically gets it wrong. Let’s see what comes back from the CCAC.
The suggested Mary Ross design is bland.
