The rare coin market has peaks and valleys. For astute collectors, this is a good thing.
A recent dip in the rare coin market has seen the prices of many important American coins down slightly in recent years. Current ANA President and National Numismatic Director for David Lawrence Rare Coins Gary Adkins thinks that this makes now a good buying opportunity for serious collectors, who wish to branch out and find new areas of numismatics to enjoy, especially ones that might be out of reach in a strong coin market.
At the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore, we discuss one such area, the Draped Bust quarter series of 1796-1807. Gary shows us a problem free circulated example of the coin that can be had for a few thousand dollars, and explains why he loves the our first quarter type.
It’s a coin type that combines rarity, copious varieties, and in circulated grades, may still be attainable for most dedicated collectors. We also talk about what one should look for when picking out a coin of this type and whether there are mint state grade levels investment grade collectors should avoid.
