Ense Petit Placidam Svb Libertate Qvietem is a Latin phrase meaning “Issued in the Defense of Liberty.” It appears on the 1775 Massachusetts “Sword-in-Hand” note. The “v” in “Svb” and “Qvietem” is, of course, the classical Latin rendering of the English letter “u”.
