Gold and Colonial Rarities Highlight Heritage New York US Coin Offerings

Heritage is pleased to present the New York US Coins Signature auction at the Waldorf Astoria New York. Online bidding for this auction is already open at HA.com/Coins.

The Premier Session, featuring nearly 700 of the finest lots in the auction, is scheduled for Thursday evening, October 29, with two more floor sessions on Friday, October 30 and an Online Signature session on Sunday, November 1. Coming immediately after The Eugene H. Gardner Collection, Part IV, this is a combined numismatic event of exceptional depth and quality that is not to be missed.

1866-S Double Eagle, courtesy HA.comThe 1866-S double eagle, struck before the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added later in the year, is a rarity in all grades, and only a handful of specimens have certified in any Mint State grade. Lot 3622 is an attractive PCGS-graded MS61 example of this issue, with only two pieces certified finer by the major grading services combined.

The 1795 half eagle with small eagle reverse is another rarity, with fewer than 1,000 pieces struck overall, and the BD-6 variety, distinguished by the second S in STATES struck over a D, is both popular and very scarce. Lot 3507 is an NGC-certified MS61 example of this issue, notable for its very late die state with numerous cracks and die clash marks evident on the obverse and additional light cracks on the reverse.

Only eight or nine examples are known of the 1785 Confederatio Copper with the INIMICA TYRANNIS AMERICANA (“Americana opposed to tyranny”) legend. All of these coins are in the range Fine to AU. Our New York auction features a VF30 NGC example, formerly of the Eric P. Newman collection, believed to be right in the middle of the known examples in terms of quality. “Hogge Money” coinage of the Sommer Islands–now far better known as Bermuda–is eagerly collected by connoisseurs of US Colonial coinage. These silver-washed brass coins were struck in denominations of two pence, three pence, six pence, and one shilling, as evidenced by the II, III, VI, or XII above the hog on the obverse. The single finest certified example of the Sommer Islands small portholes Sixpence, graded AU50 by NGC, is one of the featured coins in this auction; it boasts sharp detail along with beautiful original patina that attests to the coin’s originality.
