Baseball Hall of Famer “Goose” Gossage Visits Denver Mint….

Hall of Fame Pitcher Richard “Goose” Gossage stopped by the Denver Mint on May 13 to promote the wildly popular Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Program.

Gossage, a Colorado Springs resident, was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008. A nine-time All Star, Gossage played for nine teams over the course of his 22 year career. Gossage is best remembered for his time as a New York Yankee during their turbulent Bronx Zoo years under George Steinbrenner and Billy Martin. One of the most intimidating closers of all time, Gossage holds the New York Yankees record for lowest ERA of a pitcher (2.14) and least hits per nine innings (6.59).

While at the facility, Gossage met with Denver Mint die setter Ed Gaeringer, who explained the intricacies of striking the cup-shaped Hall of Fame coins. Gossage examined dies under magnification and even got to try his hand at striking an uncirculated half dollar, one of the 750,000 Hall of Fame half dollars authorized under Public Law 112-152.

Of the three Baseball Hall of Fame coin denominations offered, only the half dollar has yet to meet its mintage limit. As of April 20, more than fewer than 250,000 halves have sold since the program’s debut two months ago.

The following photographs of Gossage’s tour of the Denver Mint were provided to CoinWeek by Mint photographers Adam Stump and Patrick Brown.
