Heritage: Over $31 Million Sells in Long Beach Auctions

Rare large cents from the Jon Alan Boka collection of 1794 Large Cents dominated the results as Heritage’s September 7-13 Long Beach auctions raised close to $32 million overall, divided over five auctions. All prices realized include a 17.5% Buyer’s Premium.

This coin is the discovery coin for this popular variety and is generally considered the fifth finest known. It sold for $258,500 USD. A 1794 S-18b cent graded AU58+ by PCGS, considered the fifth or sixth finest known, took second honors at $176,250. Overall, this auction raised close to $14 million for its consignors.

The Twelve Oaks Collection auction, dedicated to a single collection, sold an additional $8.5 million in US coins at Long Beach. The top lot was a 1795 half eagle graded MS62 by NGC, a delightful example of this first year issue. This appealing coin sold for $141,000.

Nearly $4.5 million in world coins sold in Heritage’s Long Beach world coin auction. The top lot was a gold bar from the “Golden Fleece” shipwreck, believed to have occurred in about 1550, and so-named because of a royal stamping of the Golden Fleece on a few of the gold bars. This uncleaned bar sold for $39,950.

Four pieces of rare US currency sold for $100,000 or more as the Long Beach Currency Signature auction brought in close to $4 million. Two notes led the results with identical results of $152,750. A Fr. 344 $100 1891 Silver Certificate graded Choice Extremely Fine 45 EPQ by PMG is one of only 31 examples recorded for this number, with six in institutional collections. Only one example of this issue is known finer.

Sharing top honors was a Fr. 2220-G $5,000 1928 Federal Reserve Note graded About Uncirculated 55 by PMG issued by the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank. Only one other such note from this bank has ever appeared at auction.

The Long Beach World Currency Signature Auction was paced by a rare Irish Currency Commission Northern Bank Limited £10 6.5.1929, Pick 34, graded Very Fine 30 by PMG. This note, believed to be one of seven in existence, sold for $32,900 to lead this auction’s overall results of slightly over $1 million.

The next US coin Signature auction, scheduled for October 3-5 in Dallas, is already open for bidding at www.HA.com/coins. New currency and world coins auctions will open soon at www.HA.com.
