Description:
The Recanati Marche Italy of Arts Series 5 Euro silver coin honors the artistic contributions of Recanati, a town in central eastern Italy in the Marche region of the country. Recanati was founded in 1150 CE and in 1290 was self-proclaimed as an independent republic. Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Recanati in 1798. The town has been dubbed “the city of poetry,” as it was the hometown for poet Giacomo Leopardi and tenor Beniamino Gigli.
Obverse:
Anchoring the obverse is an elevation view of the Church of St. Augustine, including its cloister and the bell tower, which are honored in Leopardi’s poem “Passero Solitario”. In the right foreground is the municipality’s coat of arms, which includes a lion.
Around the top two-thirds of the design, along the rim, are the words REPUBBLICA ITALIANA; centered below the design is the date, 2016. To the bottom right is the designer’s name, E. L. FRAPICCINI.
Reverse:
Gracing the reverse is the Recanati Annunciation by Italian Renaissance painter Lorenzo Lotto, seen at the Museo civico Villa Colloredo Mels. In the upper-left quarter of the reverse, along the rim, are the words ITALIA DELLE ARTI. Toward the bottom of the coin, in an open space along the base of the Annunciation feature, is the word RECANATI. The mintmark, “R,” signifies the Mint of Rome. At the center bottom of the field is the denomination, 5 EURO.
