Royal Australian Mint Shines Spotlight on Century of Lighthouses

By the Royal Australian Mint….

Ahead of this century’s largest reunion of past and present Australian lighthouse personnel and in celebration of 100 years of the Australian Government managing of aids to navigation, the Royal Australian Mint unveiled two shining collectible coins as tribute on Friday, July 3.

Working with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) to mark the centenary, the Mint created a design which artistically captured the beauty of the iconic lighthouse.

Royal Australian Mint Chief Executive Officer Ross MacDiarmid said that the Mint team researched lighthouses images and publications to develop the inspiration for the design, capturing the essence of the Australian coastline while celebrating the contribution of a century of aids to navigation.

“Over the past 100 years we have seen Australian lighthouses grow into iconic parts of our coastline and we have produced these collectible coins to spotlight the relevance of lighthouses and other aids of navigation to the Australian identity,” said Mr MacDiarmid.

The fine silver frosted uncirculated coin alongside the uncirculated piece, depict the fascinating mechanics of an Australian lighthouse, providing mariners safe and efficient navigation in Australian waters.

The 100 years of Australian Government management of lighthouses and other aids to navigation was officially marked on 1 July 2015, following gaining responsibility from various State agencies on 1 July 1915.

These two limited collectible coins, the stunning 2015 $5 Fine Silver Frosted Uncirculated Coin (retailing for AU$80 each) and the 2015 $1 Uncirculated Coin (retailing for AU$13.50 each), are available now from the Mint Contact Centre on 1300 652 020 or by visiting the Royal Australian Mint’s online store https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/product-category.aspx?KWD=lighthouse.
