Stack’s Bowers Ponterio Hong Kong Asian Paper Money Auction Aug. 15-17

The ever-growing Asian Paper Money market has become quite a competitive area in numismatics, as many throw their hats into the ring. For decades, Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio has been the source for collectors and dealers alike whenever they wanted to view and bid on fresh, rare, and unique material.

The firm’s Hong Kong Auction on August 15-17, 2016, will be no different.

Among the highlights of the sale is a Pick 4Ap, a South Viet Nam 1000 Dong Proof in Gem Uncirculated condition, the finest ever offered at public auction. Rare in any form and seldom seen outside of private collections, this note is certain to attract serious collectors wishing to acquire a piece of history in a high state of preservation. It features optimum paper quality, large margins, and significant detail. The piece is nicknamed “The Old Man at the Temple,” for its striking portrait of an old South Viet Nam native staring at the temple at right.

stacksbowersaug152016lLarge format, Peoples Republic of China notes are consistently found in Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio’s auctions. The People’s Republic of China banknotes are rare in high quality, and have also been severely counterfeited. It is uncommon to find issued PRC notes certified by grading services and even less common to find certified Specimens. However, Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio has one such note in their August Hong Kong auction — a 1953 10 Yuan Specimen from the People’s Republic of China. This wide format banknote is problem free with just a minor centerfold barely visible through the holder. Punch through embossing can also be seen through the holder.

Another hallmark of the firm’s auctions is a constant supply of fresh and rare Chartered Bank of India, Australia, and China banknotes. The upcoming sale includes a plethora of such notes that include but are not limited to, a very nice Pick 48, a large format 1924 5 Dollar piece in Very Fine condition and the finest example of P-S203a, a 1928 10 Dollar note issued in Tientsin. A few Pick 57c’s will also be available, along with other notable pieces.

With an abundance of rare lots in addition to those mentioned here, the Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio August 2016 auction is sure be one of the finest presented by a major auction house in Hong Kong for quite some time. For more information visit the firm’s website at StacksBowers.com.
