Description:
To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s book, the Perth Mint has struck a colorized Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Silver Proof Coin. Bearing a denomination of $1, this .999 fine silver coin is legal tender on the island nation of Tuvalu.
Obverse
The coin’s obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Rank-Broadley’s initials IRB are located just beneath the bust truncation. Wrapping around the coin, just inside of the rim, are the following inscriptions: QUEEN ELIZABETH II, 1oz 999 SILVER, 2015, TUVALU, 1 DOLLAR. The raised devices are heavily frosted.
Reverse
A depiction of Lewis Carroll’s Alice from the classic children’s book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865). Alice is depicted in full color. She is standing on a warped checkerboard floor. In her left hand is a small blue bottle that carries the message “DRINK ME”. Above her, sitting on a branch of a tree, is the smiling Cheshire Cat. To her right is a timepiece-ogling rabbit dressed in a bespoke suit. The designer’s initials AH (Aleysha Howarth) appear between the right furl of Alice’s dress and the coin’s rim. The Perth Mint “P” mintmark is located on the opposite side of the coin, underneath the rabbit. In the center of the coin appears the stylized inscription ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND 150 YEARS. The “i” in Alice’s features a red colored heart instead of a dot.
Designer(s): Since 2008, Perth Mint designer Aleysha Howarth has worked as a designer and engraver. Coins bearing her work are collected worldwide (View Designer’s Profile). Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on coins from the UK and the Commonwealth since 1999 (View Designer’s Profile).
