U.S. Mint Reveals New Coin Product Release Schedule for Spring 2018

United States Mint 2018 Products

By CoinWeek News Staff ….
At the United States Mint Forum, held at Mint headquarters in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, October 17, Numismatic Program Manager Ann Bailey delivered a presentation on next year’s upcoming numismatic product releases, at the end of which she promised that the first quarter schedule would appear on the Mint’s website today at noon.

So, without further ado, here are the first set release dates we have for 2018 products from the U.S. Mint:

First up is the Proof version of the 2018 American Silver Eagle 1 oz coin from West Point. It will go on sale at noon on January 4. Bulk purchasers, however, can take advantage of the Mint’s new bulk pack program, the pilot of which it ran successfully in 2017 – a direct result of feedback the Mint received at its initial 2016 forum. A special box of five trays of 42 Proof Silver Eagles each that uses a minimal amount of packaging will be made available to dealers on the same day. If the bulk pack continues to be popular, then the Mint has plans to expand the program to other products, such as the Burnished Proof or the San Francisco Silver Eagle, in 2019 and beyond.

The Mint stalwart Birth Set, Congratulations Set and Happy Birthday Sets come out on January 11. The Birth and Happy Birthday sets include Proof versions of the year’s Kennedy half dollar, Jefferson nickel, Roosevelt dime and Lincoln cent struck in San Francisco and bearing the “S” mint mark. The difference between the sets is which 2018 America the Beautiful quarter each set includes. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore quarter representing Michigan, the first release of the year, is featured in the Birth Set while the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge quarter representing Rhode Island–the fifth and final release for 2018–is included as part of the Happy Birthday Set. The Congratulations Set features a 2018-S Proof 1 oz Silver Eagle.

January 17 sees the release of the first commemorative coin of the year, the World War I Veterans Centennial Uncirculated Silver Dollar, in Proof and Uncirculated versions. In addition to the individual coin, five coin and medal sets will also go on sale that day, each including one WWI Centennial silver dollar and one silver medal representing one of five branches of the United States Armed Services that participated in the conflict: the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Coast Guard, and the Air Service Corps. As the Mint explained at the forum, the Treasury Department gave them permission to create the silver medals only if the medals served to increase sales of the coin itself. Unfortunately for collectors, this means you would have to buy at least five World War I Veterans Centennial commemoratives to purchase the entire set.

On the bright side, the medals have been struck on the same planchets as the commemorative and feature beautiful designs.

The 2018 America the Beautiful Proof Set comes out next on January 23. This set includes San Francisco Proofs of the year’s five America the Beautiful quarters: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (Michigan), Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (Wisconsin), Voyageurs National Park (Minnesota), Cumberland Island National Seashore (Georgia) and Block Island National Wildlife Refuge (Rhode Island).

February starts with the release of the American Platinum Eagle. 2018’s Platinum Eagle is the first in a unique three-coin series addressing the themes of “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” from the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence. What makes these coins different from the preceding 20 years’ worth of issues is that, instead of a common obverse and alternating reverse, the 2018-2020 series will feature different obverses and share a common eagle reverse. The obverse of the 2018 coin features Lady Liberty holding a young girl, presumably her daughter.

The 2018 fractional one-tenth ounce American Liberty gold Proof Coin, which features the same design as the 2017 American Liberty gold coin, will go on sale three days later on February 8. The Mint decided to produce a fractional gold version of the Liberty coin after customer feedback suggested that the high price of gold was a significant issue when it came to stifling demand for this year’s issue.

Rolls and bags for the 2018 Native American $1 coin featuring legendary football player and Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe become available on February 15, and the Pictured Rocks
quarter three-coin set will be issued on February 20.

The 2018 America the Beautiful 90% Silver Proof Set goes on sale February 22.

March sees the release of the 2018 American Gold Eagle product line, with one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce Proof coins–along with the American Gold Eagle four-coin set–to be released on March 1.

The 2018 U.S. Mint Proof Set comes out on March 6. Per usual, the set includes Proof versions of the year’s five America the Beautiful quarters, as well as Proof versions of the Kennedy half, the Roosevelt dime, the Jefferson nickel and the Lincoln cent. All coins are struck at the San Francisco Mint.

Then, on March 15, the second commemorative of the year, the 2018 Breast Cancer Awareness commemorative, goes on sale. The series features Proof and Uncirculated $5 22-karat pink gold coins, silver $1 coins and clad half dollars, for a total of six coins.

2018 Kennedy half dollar 200-coin bags and two-roll sets become available on March 20.

And finally, the 2018 America the Beautiful Uncirculated Set goes on sale March 29.

TBD

Release dates for the remainder of the Mint’s 2018 product line are yet to be determined. Nevertheless, a tentative seasonal schedule is online.

Spring will welcome the 2018 American Buffalo one-ounce gold Proof coin; the Uncirculated 2018 Silver Eagle; Apostle Islands National Lakeshore rolls and bags, the three-coin set and the five-ounce silver Uncirculated coin; and the 2018 U.S. Mint Silver Proof and Uncirculated Coin Sets.

Summer releases will include the one-ounce Uncirculated Gold Eagle; a 2018-S Silver Eagle Proof coin; Cumberland Island quarter products; the 2018 50th Anniversary San Francisco Silver Reverse Proof Set; and Voyageurs National Park products.

The 2018 American Palladium Eagle Proof Coin comes out in the Fall, as do
the ATB Circulating Coin Set, Block Island quarter products, the 2018 Limited-Edition Silver Proof Set and the Breast Cancer Awareness Coin and Stamp Set.
