World Paper Money – PMG: Belarus to Release Seven New Banknotes

Beginning in July 2016, seven new denominations of banknotes and eight denominations of coins will be issued by Belarus. The notes will include 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 rubles. Also, the denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 kopeks and 1 and 2 rubles will be introduced as new coinage on July 1, 2016. The theme of these new notes is “Belarus is my country.” This will be the third money series for the Central Bank of Belarus since 1992.

The new notes, B137-B143, have been in storage since 2009, and as such, they will be called the 2009 series. The notes issued in 2016 will also bear the facsimile signature of Petr P. Prokopovich, chairman of the board of the bank at the time the notes were originally minted.

From July 2016 through December 2016, the existing 2000 series will be circulating along with the new 2009 series. Over a five-year period of time, the 2000 series will be phased out and replaced by the 2009 series. As of December 2021, the 2000 series will be considered invalid and demonetized. The 500 ruble note will then be the highest denomination available.

The President of the Republic of Belarus has indicated that this is being done in an effort to improve monetary circulation and in hopes of reducing costs associated with servicing cash in circulation.
