500 Lot Premier Session Highlights Heritage New York US Coins Auction Offerings

Heritage’s New York Signature US Coins auction is now open for bidding. Scheduled for November 1-3 at our New York offices at 445 Park Ave. (near 57th Street), this auction features highlights ranging from Early American to modern rarities and everything in-between.

The Premier Session of higher-valued items is more than 500 lots deep, a testament to its all-around strength. One notable individual highlight is the 1849 Mormon twenty dollar gold piece , Heritage’s first offering of such a piece in 15 years. An NGC-graded MS64 representative of the famous 1893-S Morgan dollar is testament to the Morgan dollar’s enduring popularity with collectors and this coin’s status as the key to the series. In a series where uncirculated examples of most dates are easy to find, the 1893 stands out, with just 64 coins certified in Mint State by the major grading services combined.

ha_ny_1893A 1799 dollar, 7×6 stars, graded MS65 by NGC, is the finest known example of the B-12, BB-160 variety. Only a few examples in the entire Draped Bust dollar series are known in higher grades. This coin bears an extensive pedigree, including names like Waldo Newcomer, Col. E. H. R. Green, and Jascha Heifetz, and has long been considered one of, if not the, finest examples of the date.

The 1861-S double eagle with the unusual reverse modifications designed by Anthony C. Paquet is not known in mint state grades at all, leaving collectors seeking the finest possible examples to compete for lightly circulated pieces. One such piece, graded AU58 by NGC, is being offered in New York. The Paquet reverse was slated to be adopted for all double eagles in 1861, and all three mints had new reverse dies ready to strike the coins. However, after a few examples were produced in Philadelphia, the coins were deemed unsuitable for mass production, and orders were issued to destroy the new reverse dies. New Orleans complied, but word did not get to San Francisco until after nearly 20,000 examples were struck. About 100 examples minted in San Francisco survive today, along with two struck in Philadelphia.
