At NLG Bash, Margo Russell Remembered; CoinWeek Takes 6 Numismatic Literary Guild Awards

By CoinWeek News Staff ….
On the evening of Thursday, August 13, 2015, many of the hobby’s most notable writers, publishers, and their spouses gathered at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois to celebrate the life of the late Margo Russell and to recognize the year’s best numismatic writing at the Numismatic Literary Guild’s 2015 Awards and Bash.

Rusell, the former editor of Coin World, passed away earlier this year. She was 95 years old.

Revered by her peers, Russell was considered by many the First Lady of Numismatics. Her influence over the hobby as editor of the period’s most influential numismatic publication cannot be overstated. During the course of her storied career, she gave advice and counsel to a generation of the hobby’s greatest writers, collectors, mint officials, and legislators. Upon her retirement on February 28, 1985, Russell was succeeded at the helm by Beth Deisher.

In the major awards categories, three titles won Book of the Year. They were:

  • Richard Margolis’ Benjamin Franklin in Terra Cotta, published by Kolbe & Fanning (David T. Alexander shared his feelings about this title in this First Read)
  • Grading Guide for Early American Copper Coins, by William R. Eckberg, Robert L. Fagaly, Dennis E. Fuoss and Raymond J. Williams
  • Type Three Double Eagles 1877-1907, 2nd Edition, by Mike Fuljenz

Stack’s Bowers won in the highly competitive category of Best Auction Catalog with The D. Brent Pogue Collection: Masterpieces of United States Coinage, Part I. This historic work was written by John Kraljevich and earned CoinWeek’s Editor’s Choice Award. You can read our take on it here.

Strong Showing for CoinWeek

CoinWeek.com took home six Numismatic Literary Guild awards, including Best Online News Website.

In the writing categories, CoinWeek authors earned recognition for their coverage of coins and paper money.

For Best Online Coin Article, it was a tie, with Charles Morgan and Hubert Walker’s “The Kennedy Gold Proof Launch and the Modern Coin Market” and Greg Reynolds’ “How will Coin Collectors Interpret Certified Coin Grades in the Future?” taking the top spot.

Morgan and Walker’s piece on the new Argentine 50-peso Falkland Islands note won for Best Online Paper Money Article, while columnist Louis Golino won Best Online Column for his work on CoinWeek’s Coin Analyst.

Greg Reynolds was also recognized for the depth and quality of his worth throughout the year, winning Best Portfolio. Greg has dominated this particular category for the past four years.

CoinWeek contributor Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez also won the Best New Writer award for his work with COINAge magazine.
