CoinWeek Gets Exclusive Rights to Film 1804 Dollar Presentation

Dexter-Bareford1804-dollarAs reported last week, author and researcher Mark Ferguson will be giving a major presentation on the Dexter 1804 dollar at the Central States Numismatic Society Convention in Schaumburg, Illinois. The event will take place on April 24 at 6:00 pm in room “Nirvana C”.

Afterwards, Ferguson will host a Q&A regarding his findings. He will also be there to promote his new book, The 1804 Dollar: The U.S. Mint’s Hidden Secret… as Revealed by the True Story of the ‘Dexter Dollar’, the King of American Coins.

Now, we can report that Ferguson has given CoinWeek exclusive permission to film the event. Clips will be posted online only at CoinWeek.com. After the presentation, CoinWeek will also post an article written by Ferguson that details some of his work.

We spoke with Ferguson earlier today. He says he plans on spending the next four days preparing his remarks. The first shipment of books arrived at his office while we were on the phone. Ferguson says there will be a giveaway of the book and other items after his remarks.

Mt.Gox Gives up the Ghost

Mt. GoxOn April 16, the Wall Street Journal reported that online bitcoin exchange Mt.Gox, after filing for bankruptcy protection on February 28, has requested permission to liquidate its assets.

According to anonymous insiders, the Tokyo-based company has given up trying to rebuild after suffering heavy losses earlier this year due to what Mt.Gox claimed was malicious hacking. Among the reasons given to the Wall Street Journal was the complexity of the process and the worldwide scattering of the company’s creditors.

Additionally, Mt.Gox CEO Mark Karpeles will not travel to the United States to answer questions in U.S. bankruptcy proceedings. Presumably–and for the time being–this also means he will avoid questioning in Gregory Greene’s class action lawsuit filed against Mt.Gox on February 27 in Chicago.

Currently (4/18/2014, 4:50 GMT), CoinDesk.com lists the price of one bitcoin (1 BTC) as $476.05, £283.59, €344.54 and ¥2959.97.

Miles Standish Returns with New Book

Standish Morgan BookPCGS Senior Grader and Whitman author Michael “Miles” Standish is anticipating repeat success with his new book on Morgan dollars. The book, entitled Morgan Dollar: America’s Love Affair with a Legendary Coin, is the follow-up to the 2013 Best Seller Standish wrote with former Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint John Mercanti entitled American Silver Eagles: A Guide to the U.S. Bullion Coin Program.

In his new book, Standish focuses on issues relating to the minting and storage of Morgan dollars, insights into how the coins “come” and how the grading services evaluate them, plus historical perspectives on design, market values and much more. The book is scheduled for release next month.
