PCGS Turns 40 With Its Biggest Set Registry Awards Yet

Professional Coin Grading Service has raised the stakes for Set Registry collectors in 2026.

In celebration of the company’s 40th anniversary, PCGS has announced a one-year-only upgrade to its PCGS Set Registry Awards program. The anniversary program adds larger prizes, sharper competition, and new digital recognition for winning collectors.

PCGS 40th Anniversary

The 2026 program also marks another milestone. The PCGS Set Registry came online in 2001. At the time, it introduced a new way for collectors to build, display, and compare certified coin sets on the internet.

This growth has changed the hobby. In many series, collectors no longer build in private. Instead, they compete in public. They track rankings. They study populations. They also build collections with an eye toward long-term market impact.

A 40th Anniversary Push for Set Registry Collectors

PCGS began operations in 1986. Four decades later, the company says it wants to make the collecting experience more rewarding.

PCGS President Stephanie Sabin said the 40th anniversary gives the company a chance to improve the way collectors engage with certified coins. She described the upgraded Set Registry Awards program as one way PCGS can make the hobby more exciting for members.

That approach fits the Set Registry’s role in modern numismatics. For many advanced collectors, the Registry does more than rank coins. It creates goals. It encourages upgrades. It also gives collectors a public record of achievement.

As a result, the 2026 awards program may draw intense competition across major U.S. and world coin categories.

The Longest-Running Online Coin Set Registry

The PCGS Set Registry launched online in 2001. PCGS identifies it as the first collecting platform of its kind on the internet.

Since then, PCGS has recognized thousands of collectors and their sets through the annual PCGS Set Registry Awards. Early Registry participation started on a much smaller scale. However, the platform now includes more than 200,000 sets.

That number gives the 2026 anniversary program its “wow” factor. The awards no longer spotlight a small group of early internet collectors. Instead, they highlight one of the most competitive digital arenas in the rare coin market.

In 2026, PCGS will focus the anniversary awards on 40 Categories and 20 Composites. The structure gives collectors a clearer path to compete. It also raises the pressure in series where top coins already trade with strong Registry demand.

Bigger Awards for 2026 Winners

PCGS says every 2026 PCGS Set Registry Awards winner will receive an upgraded anniversary prize package.

Each winner will receive a personalized award plaque. The plaque will feature the PCGS 40th Anniversary logo, the collector’s name, the winning category, and the name of the winning set.

Winners also may choose submission vouchers. PCGS will offer either two free Express Submission vouchers or four free Regular Submission vouchers.

In addition, coins from winning sets will qualify for an exclusive PCGS 40th Anniversary Awards Label. Standard reholder fees apply. PCGS will make this limited-time label opportunity available for 90 days after it announces the 2026 winning sets.

Finally, winners will receive digital recognition inside the PCGS Set Registry. PCGS will display a 40th Anniversary badge next to each winner’s name.

Together, these prizes turn the 2026 awards into more than a certificate of rank. They add physical recognition, grading value, label exclusivity, and permanent digital visibility.

Why the 2026 Contest Matters

The Set Registry has reshaped how many collectors define a great collection.

For decades, collectors built cabinets around taste, rarity, and opportunity. Those values still matter. However, the Registry added a visible scoring system. It also gave collectors a way to compare sets across condition, completion, and series difficulty.

That change has real market implications. A top-ranked Registry set can increase demand for specific dates, varieties, designations, and grades. In some cases, competition for a single coin can affect prices across an entire series.

PCGS Manager of Numismatic Research and Programs Charles Morgan said he has “never been more excited” about the PCGS Set Registry. He described the platform as a competitive experience that turns collecting from a solitary hobby into a dynamic pursuit with tangible market implications.

Morgan also said PCGS has already started work on collector-requested improvements to the Set Registry. According to PCGS, the company will announce more updates in the months ahead.

Deadline and Rules

Collectors who want to compete should plan ahead.

PCGS lists the 2026 awards deadline as Monday, June 30, 2026. Sets must be registered and updated by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, or 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

That deadline matters, especially for collectors who still need to submit coins for grading, crossovers, reconsideration, or reholder service.

A Milestone Year for PCGS and Registry Collecting

The 2026 PCGS Set Registry Awards program arrives at a notable moment for certified coin collecting.

PCGS turns 40. The online Set Registry turns 25. Meanwhile, Registry competition continues to influence collector behavior across classic U.S. coins, modern issues, world coins, lowball sets, toned coin showcases, and elite type collections.

For top collectors, the anniversary awards offer more than bragging rights. They offer a rare chance to win recognition tied directly to PCGS’s 40th anniversary.

For the broader hobby, the program shows how far online collecting has come since 2001. What started as a new digital idea now helps define competitive collecting in the certified coin market.
