This extraordinary modern commemorative pays homage to the rich heritage and rarity of the double sovereign. Double the weight of a traditional sovereign, its reverse portrays historic motifs originally seen on the Sydney Mint’s ‘colonial’ sovereign of 1855. Nominally valued at two pounds, double sovereigns appeared in Britain during the 1820s. Featuring Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic portrayal of St George and the dragon, these coins were minted only twice in Australia – in 1887 and 1902.
Proof Quality 22 Carat Gold
Each coin is struck from 91.70% pure gold (22-carat) in supreme proof quality.
Commemorative Sovereign Design
The commemorative 2018 Australia Double Sovereign portrays St Edward’s crown, a laurel wreath, the word AUSTRALIA and historic elements of Leonard Charles Wyon’s original Type I reverse. The inscriptions PERTH MINT and DOUBLE SOVEREIGN are incorporated into the design.
Australian Legal Tender
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination and the 2018 year-date.
Limited Mintage
The Perth Mint will release no more than 500 Australian Double Sovereign 2018 Gold Proof Coins.
Presentation Packaging and Numbered Certificate
The coin is housed in a prestigious timber presentation case within a superbly illustrated shipper and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
