High end collector coins highlighted the results of Heritage’s November 6-10 US coin auction in Beverly Hills, CA, as overall results exceeded $10.2 million. All prices realized include a 17.5% Buyer’s Premium.
A coin that is on the wantlists of many collectors is the 1907 High Relief double eagle, simply because it is often considered the most beautiful coin produced by the US Mint. Two striking varieties of this coin exist — the Wire Rim, with a “fin” around the rim, and the Flat Rim, a not entirely successful attempt to remove the extra metal on the rim and make the coins stackable. The Flat Rim variety is scarcer, and one such coin graded MS66 by NGC took top honors in Beverly Hills when it sold for $64,625.
Mint records state that the Philadelphia Mint struck 12,000 dollars for circulation, but none of these coins are accounted for. Numismatists differ as to whether the coins were melted or simply never struck with the 1895 date. The Proof 1895 dollar, therefore, is in immense demand from legions of Morgan dollar collectors looking to complete their date/mintmark sets, and examples sell for prices commensurate with their exceptional demand. A PCGS-graded example graded PR64 Cameo sold for $58,750, sharing second honors among our Beverly Hills offerings.
Gold proofs do not enjoy the wide-ranging demand of coins like the 1895 dollar or High Relief double eagle, but their beauty and exceptional rarity ensure that they will bring high prices whenever they are offered. A particularly high-end proof gold coin offered in Beverly Hills was a 1900 quarter eagle which has been graded PR68 Deep Cameo by PCGS, and which also sold for $64,625. PCGS has only certified one example finer, at Proof-68+ Deep Cameo.
