United Kingdom 2015 First World War £10 Five-Ounce Silver Coin

Description:

In commemoration of the 100-year anniversary of World War I, The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom is issuing a series of special coins honoring the nation’s sacrifice in one of the twentieth century’s most devastating wars. This five-ounce £10 coin is the second five-ounce coin in the five-year series. It depicts the cost of war, both in human lives, and in its scarring of the once beautiful European countryside.

Obverse:

The design features the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, also known as the Fifth Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The inscription reads: 10 POUNDS ∙ 2015 ∙ ELIZABETH II ∙ D ∙ G ∙ REG ∙ F ∙ D.

Reverse:

James Butler’s design depicts a war-ravaged landscape. Trees are depicted stripped bear of branches and leaves. A path of duckboards splits the frame. The muddy landscape is littered with the bodies of fallen soldiers. The design is loosely based on Butler’s research into the 42nd Rainbow Division, for whom he created a memorial in 2011. James Butler’s initials “JB” appear near the 9 o’clock position, near the coin’s rim.

Designer(s): Designer Jody Clark’s fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is the current standard for all coinage of the United Kingdom. It is gradually replacing the Ian Rank-Broadley portraits of the Queen across the Commonwealth. View Designers Profile. Sculptor James Butler’s is a renowned artist and coin designer.
