Description:

The Perth Mint continues their popular Kookaburra series of bullion coins with the 2018 issue of the 99.99% pure (.9999 fine), one-troy-ounce silver coin. First released in 1990, each year’s issue features a unique design on the reverse, making the Perth Mint one of the few producers of world bullion coins to do so.

Long one of the world’s most sought-after bullion coins, the success of the Australian Kookaburra inspired the Mint to create several other bullion programs, such as the Lunar Series and the Silver Koala.

The kookaburra is a kind of kingfisher, a bird common to much of the world; kookaburras, however, are “terrestrial” and not seafaring. The 2018 design features a species considered emblematic of the Australian Outback: the laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae), so named for the sound of its call. It is also known as the “laughing jackass” or “giant kingfisher”.

The Perth Mint will limit the maximum mintage of the 2018 Silver Kookaburra at 500,000 ounces/coins. Once production stops at the end of 2018, the Mint will release the official mintage, which may or may not be 500,000 depending on global demand.

Obverse:

2018 Australia 1 Dollar- Kookaburra Silver Bullion CoinIan Rank-Broadley’s classic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Rank-Bradley’s initials IRB are located just beneath the bust truncation. Wrapping around the coin, just inside of the rim, are the inscriptions ELIZABETH II and AUSTRALIA 2018. Inscribed at the bottom is the face value of 1 DOLLAR.

Reverse:

Its left side facing the viewer, a laughing kookaburra is portrayed during a nighttime flight, its wings caught at their apex right before a down stroke and its talons extended perhaps in preparation for landing. Above and behind the kookaburra is a heavily cratered depiction of the moon. The Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark is behind the bird on the right side of the coin. The 2018 reverse of the one-ounce silver kookaburra was designed by Neil Hollis; the initials “NH” can be found inside the tip of the bottom-most tail feather.

The central motif is surrounded by a ring, but the kookaburra’s closed beak and tail feathers extend past this border.

Inscriptions include AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, which wraps around the top of the design between the ringed border and the rim of the coin, and 2018 1 oz 9999 SILVER, which is cradled at the bottom.

Designer(s):  Since 1998, Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth effigy of HRH Queen Elizabeth has served with distinction as the obverse for coins of the UK and the Commonwealth (View Designers Profile). After teaching at the Western Australia School for Art Design and Media for over 40 years, Neil Hollis joined the Perth Mint as a designer in 2015.
