Dennis Tucker Joins CSNS Board in Major Win for Collector Education

A Red Book Veteran Joins CSNS Leadership and Collectors Should Pay Attention

Award-winning numismatist Dennis Tucker has joined the Central States Numismatic Society Board of Governors. His appointment adds one of the hobby’s most respected authors, editors, researchers, and nonprofit voices to the CSNS leadership team.

Tucker succeeds Carrie Meyer, who voluntarily stepped down from the board. Meyer made the decision because of the increased demands of her expanded work as a college professor and administrator.

Meyer previously served as curator of the famous Byron Reed Collection at The Durham Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. Today, she serves as Associate Professor and Associate Dean of the Department of Special Collections and Archives of the Health Sciences Library at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

CSNS Thanks Carrie Meyer for Her Service

CSNS President Mitch Ernst praised Meyer for her work on the board. He also emphasized the lasting value of her service.

“On behalf of the Central States Numismatic Society, I extend our sincere thanks to Carrie Meyer for her service on the Board of Governors,” Ernst said. “During her tenure, Carrie generously shared her time, talents, and perspective in support of the Society and its mission. Her contributions helped strengthen CSNS and will have a lasting impact on the organization. We are grateful for her dedication and wish her continued success in all her future endeavors.”

Meyer’s museum and archival experience gave CSNS a strong voice for preservation, research, and public education. As a result, her work aligned closely with the Society’s mission.

Why Dennis Tucker Matters to CSNS

The CSNS Board includes elected members. In addition, it includes two appointed seats. Those seats go to individuals with professional and nonprofit leadership experience. Their expertise helps support CSNS and its members.

Tucker accepted the appointment to replace Meyer. His background makes the move especially important.

“As president of Central States, I am pleased to welcome Dennis Tucker to our Board of Governors,” Ernst said. “Dennis brings not only an unparalleled record of service and achievement in numismatics but also valuable nonprofit leadership experience that will help guide the Society into the future.”

Tucker has collected coins since age seven. Over the decades, he has built a national reputation as an author, researcher, editor, publisher, and speaker. He also belongs to many national and international numismatic organizations.

From 2016 through 2024, Tucker served two terms on the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. The CCAC advises the Secretary of the Treasury on coin and medal themes, designs, commemorative programs, and related mintage recommendations.

From the Red Book to Central States

Tucker also spent two decades as publisher of Whitman Publishing. In that role, he oversaw the annual A Guide Book of United States Coins, better known as the “Red Book.” He also guided many other important hobby titles.

That experience gives CSNS a leader who understands collectors, authors, clubs, researchers, and the modern numismatic marketplace. Moreover, Tucker brings a deep understanding of how numismatic education reaches both longtime collectors and newcomers.

Tucker Names Four Priorities

In his new CSNS role, Tucker said he wants to focus on four vital areas:

Education, communications and community, young collectors, and good governance.

Those goals fit the current CSNS direction. The Society continues to invest in education. It also supports major programming tied to the annual Central States convention.

Tucker singled out the Newman Numismatic Portal Symposium as a major strength.

“I respect that the Society devotes a good amount of resources to education,” Tucker wrote in a statement about the CSNS mission. “The Newman Numismatic Portal Symposium is a brilliant feather in the Central States’ cap.”

He also praised the CSNS State Showcase program. The program highlights the numismatic history of each member state in the Society.

“I like the current CSNS commitment to showcase each member state in the Society,” Tucker said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on each state, as well as a unique way to publicize the annual convention.”

A Broader View of New Collectors

Tucker also pointed to CSNS programming for young numismatists. He praised the Society’s activities, giveaways, and educational outreach for younger collectors.

However, he also framed collector growth in broader terms.

“The Central States’ activities, giveaways, and programming for young collectors are top-notch,” Tucker said. “When it comes to encouraging new hobbyists, I don’t limit my approach to ‘kids are the future of the hobby!’ because new collectors in their forties and fifties are just as important to cultivate.”

Even so, Tucker stressed that young people remain a critical audience.

“But I do think young people with curiosity and intelligence are an important audience,” he said. “The American Numismatic Association and Central States are leaders in this area.”

That view reflects a key challenge for the hobby. Numismatics needs young collectors. Yet it also needs adults who discover coins later in life. Therefore, effective outreach must serve both groups.

Good Governance Takes Center Stage

Tucker also highlighted governance as a top priority. He said he and Ernst share a strong interest in professional nonprofit leadership.

“Mitch and I have had a lot of conversations, and we’re ‘in harness,’ as Dave Bowers says, when it comes to the importance of solid, professional governance in the nonprofit world,” Tucker said. “Since I retired, I’ve been able to concentrate on volunteer work, and I like what I see at Central States.”

That comment matters. Strong governance helps nonprofit organizations grow without losing sight of their mission. It also builds trust with members, donors, clubs, dealers, exhibitors, and the broader collector community.

What This Means for Central States

Tucker’s appointment gives CSNS another nationally recognized voice at a time of growth. The Society has expanded its educational presence. It has also strengthened convention programming and state-level storytelling.

Now, CSNS adds a board member with decades of publishing experience, deep hobby relationships, and a clear interest in education and governance.

For collectors, that combination matters. Central States has become more than a regional show host. It now plays a larger role in collector education, digital access, young numismatist outreach, and public numismatic history.

With Dennis Tucker on the Board of Governors, CSNS gains a leader who has spent his career explaining coins, medals, and the people behind them. That makes this appointment more than a personnel change. It marks another step in the Society’s push to build a stronger, smarter, and more connected hobby.
