PCGS Offers $5,000 for First 2026 July 4th Privy Quarter

A 25-Cent Coin Could Win $5,000: The Hunt for the 2026 July 4th Quarter Begins

A 25-Cent Coin Could Launch the Biggest Quarter Hunt Since the 2019-W Craze

Professional Coin Grading Service has launched a new national coin hunt. This time, the prize centers on one of the lowest-mintage circulating quarter varieties of the modern era.

PCGS will pay a $5,000 bounty for the first 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarter with the special July 4th privy mark that gets shipped for grading submission. The winning submitter will also receive the “First Discovery” pedigree on the PCGS label.

Win the race to be the very first to ship a 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarter with a July 4th privy mark to PCGS.

The United States Mint will release only 250,000 of these special quarters. Even more important, collectors cannot buy them directly from the Mint. Instead, the Mint will place them randomly into circulation through banks and financial institutions nationwide in time for the Fourth of July.

That makes this issue a true pocket-change prize.

The July 4th Quarter Marks America’s 250th Anniversary

The special quarter honors the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It belongs to the Mint’s broader 2026 Semiquincentennial coin program.

The standard 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarter features Thomas Jefferson on the obverse. Jefferson wrote the Declaration and later served as the third President of the United States. The reverse shows the Liberty Bell ringing. The Bell’s famous crack remains visible in the design.

However, the special July 4th version adds a key twist. It carries a “July 4th” privy mark and no mint mark. The privy mark appears on the obverse, just to the left of Jefferson.

That small mark makes all the difference.

PCGS Relaunches Quarter Quest

PCGS President Stephanie Sabin called the new hunt a real “Golden Ticket” moment for American numismatics.

“We’re thrilled to relaunch Quarter Quest, an exciting and highly successful campaign we ran in 2019 and 2020 for rare, circulation-only quarters released back then,” Sabin said.

The comparison fits. In 2019, the Mint released two million of each 2019 America the Beautiful quarter with the “W” mint mark into circulation. The Mint mixed those West Point quarters with Philadelphia and Denver coins and distributed them through normal banking channels.

Then, in 2020, PCGS continued Quarter Quest for the 2020-W America the Beautiful quarters. Those coins also entered circulation and carried the special V75 privy mark for the 75th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Collectors searched rolls, bank boxes, registers, and pocket change. The hunt brought new energy to modern circulating coins.

Now PCGS has raised the stakes again.

Why This Hunt Looks Harder

The 2026 July 4th privy quarter brings a much smaller supply.

The 2019-W quarters had mintages of two million pieces per design. By contrast, the Mint will release only 250,000 July 4th privy Declaration of Independence quarters. That equals just one-eighth of the 2019-W mintage per design.

Therefore, this hunt may prove much tougher.

PCGS will award the $5,000 bounty to the submitter of the first qualifying July 4th privy quarter shipped for grading submission. The coin will also receive the “First Discovery” pedigree.

After that, the clock keeps running.

Early Find Pedigrees Add More Incentive

PCGS will also offer an Early Find® pedigree for qualifying July 4th privy quarters submitted within 90 days after the First Discovery coin arrives.

In addition, all Early Find® coins submitted through the 2026 Quarter Quest campaign will receive a free America Semiquincentennial Special Label.

That creates two levels of excitement. One collector can win the $5,000 bounty and First Discovery label. However, many more collectors may still qualify for the Early Find® pedigree and special label.

How to Spot the 2026 July 4th Privy Quarter

Collectors should check every 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarter closely.

Look for these markers:

  • Thomas Jefferson on the obverse
  • Dual date “1776 ~ 2026”
  • “July 4th” privy mark to the left of Jefferson
  • No P or D mint mark
  • Liberty Bell reverse with visible crack

The regular Declaration of Independence quarter carries standard Philadelphia or Denver mint marks. The special privy-marked quarter does not.

As a result, the best strategy remains simple. Check change. Search rolls. Ask banks for new quarter boxes. Then inspect each Declaration of Independence quarter before spending it.

A Modern Rarity Built for the Public

The July 4th privy quarter gives collectors something rare: a government-issued circulating coin with a tiny mintage, a major national anniversary, and a national treasure-hunt story.

It also brings the hunt back to its roots.

No online sellout,  or household order limit and waiting room. No premium Mint product.

Just a quarter.

And maybe $5,000.
