In February, Stack’s Bowers offered the fourth in a series of four auctions of paper money and related items from the historic collection of Joel R. Anderson (click here for a video of some of the highlights).
The Anderson Collection broke a number of paper money records and featured the sale of a number of currency notes that sold for an excess of one million dollars each.
Not every great note with personality commands such astronomical premiums, however, and we were happy to learn that our friend Don Kagin had purchased one of our very favorite pieces from the fourth session: a $400 bond issued to fund the American government’s war efforts against the British during the War of 1812.
The bond was the final lot offered in the evening and sold for $4,800 USD. What we learned after talking to Don is that the bond had special meaning for him, that he had worked with Joel Anderson to build a collection of these important American financial instruments, and that these bonds were the subject of his new book, which now is available to purchase on his website, www.kagins.com.
